Driver charged with OVI in head-on crash: Westlake Police Blotter
WESTLAKE, Ohio –
OVI head-on crash: Detroit Road
The Westlake Police Department at 8:20 p.m. on June 14 received multiple 911 calls about a head-on crash between two vehicles on Detroit Road west of Dover Center Road.
Witnesses said that a Chevrolet Trailblazer crossed left of center and struck a Ford Fusion head-on, according to a police press release. Three people were sent to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Trailblazer appeared intoxicated, and witnesses had seen the vehicle stationary at a green light moments before the crash, according to the police. The 41-year-old Westlake man was charged at the hospital with OVI. He refused a chemical test and was charged with a refusal with a prior OVI conviction. His last arrest was in 2010, according to the police.
Detroit Road was closed for a time while the vehicles were cleared from the scene.
OVI crash: Detroit Road
Officers at 10 p.m. on June 9 responded to a one-car crash on Detroit Road west of Clague Road.
A Toyota Prius struck a pole and ended up disabled on the tree lawn of the University Hospitals Urgent Care Center.
The 62-year-old female driver had been drinking at a nearby bar and admitted that she had hit something “bad,” according to a police department press release. She could not explain why she struck a pole.
The North Ridgeville resident was field tested and arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. She refused a breath test at the Westlake jail, so her license was placed under immediate suspension. She was charged with OVI and failure to control. No one was injured.
Theft: Sperry Drive
Westlake police officers at 7 a.m. on June 12 responded to a business in the 24000 block of Sperry Drive for the reported thefts of catalytic converters.
In all, catalytic converters had been sawed off five trucks in the parking lot. Investigators located footage of the suspects and their vehicle from nearby businesses. A suspect plate was developed using Westlake’s Flock license plate readers. Police departments across the state were alerted to the theft, and the suspect vehicle was stopped a day later in Dayton.
A male suspect has been identified and detectives are determining if he is the person who committed the theft in Westlake.
Weapon under disability: Sperry Drive
An officer at 8:30 a.m. on June 15 spotted a man slumped over in a vehicle in the parking lot of the Super 8 Motel on Sperry Drive.
When the officer checked on the man in the driver’s seat, he looked up. The officer noted that the car’s interior was filled with smoke and there were signs of illegal drug use in the vehicle, according to a police press release.
Investigation revealed that the 36-year-old Cleveland resident possessed hundreds of suspected ecstasy pills, as well as powder and suspected oxycodone pills. The officers noted that the pills were of various colors and shapes, including Homer Simpson, dolphins, and the Netflix logo. In addition, a loaded .40-caliber handgun was found in the car. A search warrant served on the associated hotel room revealed a second handgun along with additional suspected felony-level narcotics, according to a police statement.
The man was charged with felony possession of a weapon while under a disability (past felony drug convictions) along with new felony drug possession charges.
