Driver released on bail after Sutton Coldfield crash injures seven, five seriously
A drink-drive suspect has been released on bail after a head-on smash in Sutton Coldfield[1] left seven people with injuries, five of them seriously hurt. The crash took place in Ox Leys Road at its junction with Reddicap Heath Road, right by the Anvil Pub, on Saturday (June 3) shortly after 7pm.
The incident involved a car and a taxi, with seven of the occupants said to have been injured. West Midlands Ambulance Service[2] scrambled the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance to the scene, along with five land ambulances and a senior paramedic officer.
Medics found two men and three women were seriously injured in the crash with four of those, twe men and two women, were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital[3] major trauma hospital in Birmingham. Another woman who was seriously injured was taken to Heartlands Hospital[4].
While two more casualties with less severe injuries were taken to Sutton’s Good Hope Hospital[6] and to Heartlands. A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called to reports of a two-car road traffic collision at the junction of Ox Leys Road and Reddicap Heath Roat at 7.16pm on Saturday night.
“Five ambulances, a paramedic officer and the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance attended the scene. On arrival we discovered seven patients.
“Two men and two women were treated for potentially serious injuries before being taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. A further woman was also treated for potentially serious injuries and was taken to Heartlands Hospital.
“Two more men were treated for injuries not believed to be serious, and they were taken to Heartlands Hospital and Good Hope Hospital.”
West Midlands Police[8] was also in attendance. The force initially said: “We were called to Ox Leys Road in Sutton Coldfield shortly after 7pm on 3 June after a crash between a car and a taxi.
“A number of people were injured and the driver of the car, a 22-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of driving while over the limit and causing injury by dangerous driving.”
In an update, a spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said: “The drink-drive suspect has now been released on bail with conditions. Enquiries continue.”
