Girl, 15, dies in tragedy off Humber coast, police confirm

A teenage girl has tragically died following a major air-sea rescue operation at the mouth of the Humber estuary.

Police today confirmed the death of the 15-year-old girl, who went missing along with a 15-year-old boy on Saturday afternoon. Emergency services launched a huge search operation after the teenagers disappeared from Cleethorpes beach.

They were rescued from the sea at around 7.30pm last night. The girl was airlifted to hospital, but sadly passed away.

The boy has been discharged from hospital following treatment. Coastguard teams, the police, lifeboat crews and the fire service were involved in the search.

A force spokesman said: “We can confirm that a girl, aged 15, has sadly passed away following a multi-agency search to locate two missing children off the coast of Cleethorpes, North East Lincolnshire.

“At around 2pm on Saturday June 24, we were notified of two missing children in Cleethorpes, North East Lincolnshire. At that time it was unknown if they had entered the water.

“Following a multi-agency response, two children were recovered from the water. Both needed immediate urgent medical care.

“Sadly, the girl, who will not be named at the request of the family, did not recover.”

Detective Inspector Nathan Reuben, who is leading the investigation into the girl’s death, says the force will be working with the coastguard and other agencies to piece together what happened. He said: “Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with the family at this incredibly difficult time.

“We ask that they are given the time and space to process this tragic news. The family is being supported by specially trained officers.

“The boy who was also recovered from the water was taken to the hospital to receive medical care. He has since been discharged. We are working together with all the relevant agencies including Humberside Fire and Rescue services and the Coastguard to fully understand the circumstances of the tragic accident.”
