Head-on M5 crash leaves driver fighting for life after car ‘deliberately driven at speed’ on wrong side of motorway
A horror head-on crash on the M5 has left a driver fighting for his life and another hospitalised with injuries. Police said one of the vehicles was being ‘deliberately driven at speed in the wrong direction’.
The crash happened on the northbound M5 between junctions seven for Evesham and junction six for Worcester. The northbound carriageway was closed while emergency services worked at the scene[1] and the southbound was closed for a while to allow the air ambulance to land.
Police are now appealing for witnesses to the incident that caused huge delays in the area[2]. They said the crash caused potentially life threatening injuries to one driver and serious injuries to the other.
The driver of a VW Golf was taken by land ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham where he is in a critical but stable condition. The driver of the other vehicle, a Mercedes Sprinter van, was taken to Worcester Royal Infirmary with leg and chest injuries.
A statement from West Mercia Police[4] said: “It is believed the grey VW Golf was deliberately driven in the wrong direction at speed on the motorway. Both vehicles were extensively damaged.”
Anyone who witnessed the accident or has dash cam footage is asked to contact Sergeant Liam Bennett by emailing [email protected] quoting log 00155_I_14062023.
