Joshua Roberts: Safety concerns raised over ‘dangerous’ road where Caernarfon teenager died
Local politicians are “very concerned” that another serious accident will happen on the road where a teenager was killed earlier this month. Joshua Lloyd Roberts sadly passed away on Friday, June 2 after being involved in a collision on the A4085 Ffordd Waunfawr in Caeathro, just outside Caernarfon[1].
The teenager’s death rocked the local community in Caernarfon and further afield and tributes have poured in for the “happy and outgoing” 19-year-old ever since. A memorial football match was also held at Cae Stanley in Bontnewydd[2] last week, followed by a tribute at the Wales match against Armenia in Cardiff City Stadium on FRiday night.
Now Gwynedd Council[3] has been urged to assess the safety of the A4085 entering Caeathro and to carry out any improvements needed on the stretch of road as soon as possible. The Council says it will work closely with North Wales Police and consider any steps that need to be taken based on the conclusions of their investigation.
Previous accidents and the layout of the road “strongly suggest that the site is dangerous”, Siân Gwenllian MS, Hywel Williams MP, Caernarfon Town Mayor Cai Larsen, and local councillors Menna Trenholme and Dewi Wyn Jones have said in a joint letter to the council.
The letter reads: “We are sending you this letter following the recent car accident on the A4085 near Glan Gwna Holiday Park, which resulted in the death of a young man from Caernarfon. We’re sure you will be aware that another fatal accident happened very close to this location in the past.
“The accidents, as well as the appearance of this part of the road, strongly suggest that the site is dangerous, and we are very concerned that another serious accident will happen there sooner or later. We therefore ask you to carry out an inspection of this part of the road in order to assess its safety and make any improvements that are needed as soon as possible.”

A 32-year-old man[5] was arrested on Friday, June 8 on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. He has now been released on bail pending further enquiries. North Wales Police[6] said last week that no further action is being taken against a 19-year-old man who was arrested and released under investigation days after Mr Roberts’ death.
A Cyngor Gwynedd[7] spokesperson said: “We sympathise deeply with the family and friends of Josh Roberts at this sad and difficult time. As in the case of all fatal accidents, we will work closely with the police and consider if there are any steps that need to be taken based on the conclusions of the investigation.”
