Lapeer County crash leaves man with life-threatening injuries

LAPEER COUNTY, MI – The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a broadside collision between two pickup trucks early Wednesday morning.

Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched around 8 a.m. Wednesday, June 21, to the intersection of Van Dyke and Armstrong roads in Goodland Township, north of Imlay City, following reports of a crash.

Officials said a 30-year-old Clinton Township man was driving a 2011 Ford Ranger north on Van Dyke Road when it made a left turn onto Armstrong Road and into the path of a southbound 2020 Ford F-250 that was hauling a boat. The Ford F-250 was driven by a 59-year-old man from Lorena, Texas.

The pickup trucks stayed together following the collision and departed the southwest quadrant of the intersection, officials said. The Ford Ranger overturned and came to a rest on its driver’s side, with the other pickup truck partially on top of it.

Motorists that came across the crash were able to free the driver of the Ford Ranger before emergency personnel arrived. He was unconscious, officials said.

The driver of the Ranger was taken to McLaren Lapeer Region hospital by Lapeer County EMS Ambulance Service. He remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, according to police.

The driver of the Ford F-250 and his passenger were uninjured.

The roadway was closed for approximately two hours for rescue, investigation, and vehicle removal. Lapeer County Sheriff Deputies were assisted at the scene by Goodland Township Fire Department, Lapeer County EMS Ambulance Service, and Michigan State Police Lapeer Post.

A preliminary investigation does not suggest that either alcohol or excessive speeds are contributing factors. The crash remains under investigation by Lapeer County Sheriff’s deputies.
