Live M1 updates as 60 minutes of traffic builds after multi-vehicle crash

There were severe traffic delays on the M1 this afternoon (Sunday) of up to 60 minutes. The southbound carriageway in Leicestershire was the scene of a multi-vehicle collision within junction 21 shortly before 5pm.

The road reopened in a timely fashion, but there were still long queues. The road was cleared and fully reopened by 6pm.

National Highways said: "There are long delays on the M1 southbound in Leicestershire, due to a multi vehicle collision within J21 near (Leicester). There are currently long delays of 60 minutes above usual journey times.

"Road users are advised to plan their journeys in advance, allow extra time and consider alternative routes if possible."

Inrix traffic monitoring said: "Severe delays, two lanes closed and queueing traffic due to multi-vehicle accident and people slowing to look at accident on the opposite side on M1 Southbound at J21 M69 (Leicester). Congestion to the A5450 Westbound.

"Travel time is around 60 minutes. The road has been reopened after being closed earlier although lanes two and three (of three) remains closed."
