M1 brought to standstill over five vehicle crash as air ambulance called

The M1 was brought to a standstill on Wednesday morning after a five-vehicle crash on the Southbound carriageway. The crash involved cars, a van, and a lorry, and happened between J23 and J22 shortly before 8.30am – with the incident leading to an air ambulance being called.

The M1 Northbound, which was already experiencing heavy congestion due to an earlier incident near Leicester Forest East Services, had to be shut for 40 minutes to allow the air ambulance to land. The M1 Southbound was shut for an hour and a half while emergency services attended the scene.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police[1] has now confirmed that four people were taken to the hospital via land ambulance to be treated for their injuries, but confirmed the injuries are not life-threatening or life-changing. The road reopened at around 10.30am and the M1 Southbound is now clear of congestion.

The police spokesperson told LeicestershireLive: “Police were called to a report of a collision involving five vehicles on the M1 southbound shortly before 8.30am today (Wednesday 14 June).

“Officers attended along with colleagues from the East Midlands Ambulance Service[3].

“Four people were taken to hospital to be treated for injuries that are not life-threatening or life-changing. The air ambulance attended, but no-one was airlifted. The motorway has since reopened.”
