M5 crash: Two in hospital after serious collision between car and van near Gloucestershire

Two people have been hospitalised after a serious crash between a car and a van on the M5 this morning (June 14). Emergency services, including the air ambulance, were called to the scene heading northbound between junctions 6 and 7 at around 10.35am.

It has since been confirmed that the driver of the car suffered significant injuries and was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Meanwhile, the van driver sustained leg injuries and was taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

West Mercia Police said the motorway will remain closed heading northbound near Gloucestershire[1] for the “next few hours”. The southbound side has reopened.

According to traffic monitoring site Inrix, there are “severe delays” heading northbound amid the closure. The current travel time is said to be around one hour and 15 minutes[3].

The force said: “Police were called to a collision on the M5 northbound between Junction 6 and 7 at 10.35am this morning (Wednesday, June 14) involving a car and a van. Police and fire are still at the scene. Air ambulance attended.

“The driver of the car sustained significant injuries and has been taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The van driver has suspected leg injuries and has also been taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

“The M5 southbound has reopened across all lanes and there is one lane open on northbound between Junction 6 and 7. All lanes northbound will remain closed for the next few hours to allow for the vehicles to be recovered.”

The latest log from Inrix says: “Severe delays, queueing traffic for nine miles and two lanes closed due to accident, a car and a van involved on M5 Northbound between J7 A44 (Worcester/Evesham) and J6 A4538 Pershore Lane (Worcester). Congestion to J8 (M50 Interchange). Travel time is 1 hour 15 minutes.

“Lanes one and two (of three) are closed. The motorway was closed since 10.50am to attend to the accident just after J7. The motorway partly reopened prior to 12.25pm southbound was held for 10 minutes at 11.50am to allow an air ambulance to land.”
