Man suffers serious injury as lorry goes up in flames after M56 crash

A man suffered a serious injury after his lorry overturned and caught fire following a crash with a car on the M56 in Cheshire.

Emergency services – including an air ambulance – were called to the scene following the collision on the westbound carriageway between junction 9 and junction 10 shortly before 3pm yesterday (June 29).

The crash caused major tailbacks and the section of motorway had to remain closed overnight as emergency resurfacing and barrier repairs were carried out. It reopened shortly before 5am today.

Cheshire Constabulary have confirmed that the driver of the HGV is believed to have sustained a serious injury to his ankle, while the female driver of the car is understood to have not sustained any serious injuries but was taken to hospital for further checks.

Three fire engines – from Birchwood, Runcorn and Warrington[2] – were sent to the incident. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that by 4.15pm: “The fire has now been extinguished with two hose reels and crews are cooling the lorry with water and standing by.”

Three hours later, at 7.15pm, all crews had left the scene.

A spokesperson from Cheshire Police said: “At around 3pm today (Thursday 29 June), police were called to reports of a collision on M56 between junction 9 and junction 10. Officers in attendance found that the collision involved a HGV and car.

“The driver of the HGV, a man, is believed to have sustained a serious injury to his ankle and is being treated by paramedics. The driver of the car, a woman, is not believed to have sustained any serious injuries and has been taken to hospital for further checks.”
