Man sustains serious injuries to his ankle in M56 crash
The collision involved a car and lorry on the M56 westbound between junction 9, Lymm, and junction 10, Stretton, at 3pm this afternoon, Thursday.
The lorry overturned on its side as a result and both vehicles caught fire.
The motorway was closed following the crash and remains closed now – with the westbound carriageway expected to be closed for a ‘considerable amount of time’.
A large emergency service presence including police, fire, and ambulance attended the scene, and an air ambulance was also called.
Cheshire Police has confirmed the driver of the HGV, a man, is believed to have sustained a serious injury to his ankle.
He is being treated at the scene by paramedics.
Meanwhile the driver of the car, a woman, has been taken to hospital for further checks but is not believed to have sustained any serious injuries.
There are huge delays in and around Warrington – including Hatton, Daresbury, and Preston Brook – as a result of the incident.
According to National Highways North West, traffic held on the eastbound is now being released past the scene via lane one and the hard shoulder.
A Cheshire Police Spokesperson said: “The road is currently closed in both directions and motorists are advised to avoid the area.”
