The Metropolitan Police said officers were called at just after 1.05pm to reports of a crash on Woodford Avenue. “At the scene a mother and her four-year-old had been in collision with a car,” they said.

The driver of the car stopped at the scene, police added, and the mother and child were taken to an east London hospital by the ambulance service.

“The child’s condition is not life threatening,” said police. “We await an update on the condition of the injured woman.”

No-one has been arrested. As of 8pm on Wednesday, Woodford Avenue remained closed southbound from Glenwood Gardens to the A12[3] Eastern Avenue (Gants Hill Roundabout).
