Police issue A45 Coventry Road crash update after boy, 12, killed while riding his bike

Police have issued an update on a driver arrested after a boy tragically died. The 12-year-old child was riding a bicycle when he was involved in a collision with a car.

The schoolboy, who has been named in tributes at the scene as ‘Azaan’,[1] was struck on the A45 Coventry Road in South Yardley. The tragedy took place near to Kings Road on Thursday evening, June 8.

The boy, who was found with life-threatening injuries, sadly died at the scene. West Midlands Police[2] arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and being unfit through drugs.

He remained in custody on Friday as police appealed for witnesses. Police now say he has now been released on bail.

In a brief update on Saturday (June 10), a spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said: “He has been released on bail.” Police, alongside paramedics, had rushed to the scene around 6.15pm on Thursday.

But despite the best efforts of paramedics who administered advanced life support, the cyclist was confirmed dead at the scene. The 12-year-old’s family is being supported by specially trained officers, police say.

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit at West Midlands Police[4], previously said: “We are appealing for witnesses and in particular for people with dash cam footage to please contact us. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the boy and we are doing all we can to support them at this very difficult time.”
