Stevenage: ‘Life-threatening’ injuries for driver in crash
Herts police were called at around 6.05am[1] to reports that a white Ford Transit van had struck a barrier near the junction with Broadhall Way before overturning onto its side, leaving the driver trapped.
Police officers attended the scene alongside two fire engines from Stevenage station, four ambulances from the East of England Ambulance Service, and an ambulance officer vehicle.
Firefighters worked with the ambulance service to free the driver from his vehicle. He was taken to Lister Hospital with injuries that a police spokesperson earlier described as "serious" but are now described as "life-threatening".
Road closures remained in place while the vehicle was recovered and investigations were carried out. At around 2pm, Herts Highways tweeted that the A602 had reopened.
Police are now asking for any witnesses to come forward.
Sergeant Rebecca Cornell, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit, said: “Our enquiries are continuing at this time to establish the circumstances around the collision.
"As part of this, we are appealing for anyone with information to please come forward. “Did you see a white Ford Transit van being driven in the area around the time? Have you captured any dash cam footage which may be able to assist us? “We believe that a witness may also have stopped at the scene, but left prior to police arrival. If this was you, please get in touch with us.” Information can be reported online at herts.police.uk/report[3], via online web chat at herts.police.uk/contact[4], or by calling 101 and quoting ISR 111 of June 22, 2023.References
