The 31 new speed cameras being switched on in Wales On Monday

On Monday more than 30 new speed cameras will go live in an attempt to improve road safety across south Wales. GoSafe, the Wales road casualty reduction partnership, work with the highways authorities to enforce safety camera schemes.

These schemes include fixed speed cameras, red light cameras, and average speed cameras in addition to mobile enforcement cameras. South Wales Police[1] host the central ticket office who administer offences from these schemes across mid and south Wales.

From Monday, June 26, another 31 cameras across south Wales will begin processing offences. It comes before the speed limit on restricted roads in Wales will reduce from 30mph to 20mph on September 17 this year.

The new cameras include a mixture of speed cameras and ‘speed on green’ cameras at traffic lights. They are "multi-functional cameras" and have the ability to capture both red light and speeding offences. According to GoSafe the scheme aims to "make roads safer for everyone and improve the behaviour of the minority of drivers breaking the speed limit".
