All three people in the Mercedes C200 were taken to hospital, including one with life threatening injuries, one with serious injuries, and another with minor injuries.
In a statement, Sussex Police said the collision happened on a stretch of the A285 between Keeper’s Cottage and Littleton Farm Campsite.
The half-mile long stretch of road curves around a blind spot in the West Sussex countryside.
A section of the country road was closed for several hours overnight but has since reopened, the police force said.
They called on anyone who had seen either vehicle driving in the area last night to contact Sussex Police.
The police force also called for anyone who may have dashcam footage of either car to contact them.
‘Anyone who saw either vehicle being driven in the area around that time, or captured any relevant footage on dash cam, is asked to email quoting serial 1542 of 10/06,’ Sussex police said.
