Two seriously injured after M5 crash as car driver rushed to hospital
A driver was rushed to hospital after his car was involved in a crash with a van on the M5 in Worcestershire[1] which shut the route. It happened on the northbound carriageway between Junction 7, for Worcester south and Evesham and Junction 6, for Worcester[2] north and Kidderminster, at around 10.30am today, Wednesday, June 14.
Fire, ambulance and police crews attended the scene. Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service[3] confirmed it sent crews from Worcester, Droitwich and Leominster to the incident after getting the call at 10.45am. The northbound carriageway of the M5 was shut between the two junctions, while the southbound carriageway was also temporarily shut to allow a Midlands Air Ambulance[4] to land.
Fire crews had to help the man out of the car after he was ‘medically trapped’ following the crash. He was then cared for by paramedics with the driver of the van also injured.
The car driver was said to have sustained serious injuries. He was given advanced trauma care and taken to one of the region’s major trauma centres, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital[6] by land ambulance.
The van driver was also seriously injured but his injuries were not life-threatening and he was taken by land ambulance to Worcester Royal Hospital.
A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service[7] said: “We were called to a road traffic collision involving a car and a van on the M5 between junctions 7 and 6 at 10.37am. Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and the Midland Air Ambulance from Strensham attended the scene.
“Upon arrival we found two patients who were the drivers of the vehicles. The first was the driver of the car. He was assessed by ambulance staff and had sustained serious injuries.
“He received advanced trauma care at the scene before being conveyed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment. The second was the driver of the van.
“He was assessed and had sustained serious injuries that were non-life-threatening injuries. He received treatment before being conveyed to Worcestershire Royal Hospital for further assessment.”
West Mercia Police[9] confirmed it was investigating the incident. A spokeswoman for the force said: “Police were called to a collision on the M5 northbound between Junction 6 and 7 at 10:35am on Wednesday morning, June 14, involving a car and a van. Police and fire are still at the scene. Air ambulance attended.
“The driver of the car sustained significant injuries and has been taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The van driver has suspected leg injuries and has also been taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital.”
One lane of the northbound carriageway later reopened but National Highways reported delays of 90 minutes in the area. Police said the two lanes shut on the northbound carriageway would remain closed for some hours to allow for the vehicles to be recovered.
