Damage to pavement and Brock Road overpass needs to be assessed before highway can open
Wed., June 21, 2023timer3 min. read
Traffic through Durham Region is a tangled mess following a fatal accident on Hwy. 401 in Pickering.
The accident claimed two lives after a tractor-trailer hauling fuel crashed and the fuel caught on fire.
The accident happened near Brock Road when a driver of an eastbound tractor-trailer lost control of his vehicle, slammed into the centre median, and crossed over into the westbound lanes. It collided with another tractor-trailer and a motor vehicle.
The eastbound truck was hauling fuel, and it ignited in the crash.
Both truck drivers were killed in the accident, while two people in the passenger vehicle were able to get out of it and safely escape.
The accident happened at about 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20.
Pickering Fire Chief Steph Boyd said. “We didn’t put it out — we let it burn out,” Boyd added, noting the crews were monitoring the situation.
“It was fuel, either gasoline or diesel or a combination of both. Some trucks carry both,” he said.
Pickering crews responded at about 11 p.m. and left the scene at 4 a.m., although Boyd noted the fire stopped burning just after 2 a.m.
There were no injuries to any firefighters, he noted.
Crews from the Ajax and Toronto fire services both assisted, Boyd added.
On Wednesday, Durham Region put out a statement saying, “The Regional Municipality of Durham, Works Department would like to advise residents and road users that regional roads continue to be impacted by the tragic collision on Highway 401 at Brock Road last night that has left portions of Highway 401 closed in the City of Pickering.
“Durham Region Transit (DRT) is experiencing delays in the Pickering Area. All routes in this area have been impacted by increased traffic. While we are managing these impacts, delays and cancellations are expected to continue throughout the day,” the statement added.
“The Region is asking residents to remain patient, expect increased traffic congestion in the area and reminds everyone to allow for extra travel time on Durham roads.”
Pickering Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner posted on the Pickering Neighbours Facebook page, saying, “Fire services cleared the scene early morning and turned it over to OPP for collision investigation.
“The incident involved two commercial vehicles and one passenger vehicle and resulted in the death of two drivers (both drivers from the two commercial vehicles). Multiple fires were caused due to a fuel spill and the collision,” Brenner added.
“The fuel spill and fire was contained and extinguished by fire services after consultation with the Region,” he said, adding an advisory was issued to residents in the area to close their windows and doors.
Brenner noted, “The Brock Road Bridge will undergo assessment from MTO engineers. It is presently closed for an unknown duration. (Hwy) 401 east and westbound will require repair and will most certainly impact the morning rush hour. (Traffic in both) directions are presently closed.”
Residents should continue to avoid the area, he added.
In a tweet posted shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said, “We still have significant traffic issues in this area. I want to advise anyone who is hoping to travel through this area this afternoon we are still waiting on the assessment from the ministry of transportation regarding the bridge, highway, roads, lighting infrastructure damage and what needs to be done before the highways can be reopened.”
Schmidt urged everyone to make alternate travel plans and to avoid the area.
In a video Schmidt posted, the Brock Road bridge can be seen in the background, scorched black from the fire.
Durham Regional Police Traffic Services tweeted, “Roads through @TownOfAjax @CityofPickering are very busy. Plan ahead, drive safe and be mindful that everyone is in the same boat — delayed and likely late. Aggressive and dangerous driving will not be excused. Work as a team, and everyone will arrive safely.
