Two men are in hospital – one with potentially life-threatening injuries – after a VW Golf was “deliberately driven in the wrong direction” down the M5. A VW Golf collided with a Mercedes Sprinter during a head-on smash along the northbound carriageway yesterday morning, June 14.

The VW Golf driver was taken by land ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham where he is in a critical but stable condition. The driver of the Mercedes Sprinter was deliberately driven in the wrong direction at speed on the motorway.

Both vehicles were extensively damaged following the crash between Junction 7 and 6 in Worcester[1] at around 10.42am. West Mercia Police has launched an appeal for information.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police[3] said: “Police are appealing for witnesses to a two car head on collision on the northbound M5 at 10.42am yesterday. The accident happened between Junctions 7 and 6 northbound and caused potentially life threatening injuries to one driver and serious injuries to the other.

“The driver of a VW Golf was taken by land ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham where he is in a critical but stable condition. The driver of the other vehicle, a Mercedes Sprinter van, was taken to Worcester Royal Infirmary with leg and chest injuries.
