Woman pedestrian seriously hurt in town centre collision with lorry

The pedestrian was crossing over the A7 road outside the Fleece Hotel in the Borders town of Selkirk around 3.30p.m. (Monday) when she was knocked

over and is now fighting for her life.

The woman, who lives locally, suffered serious injuries and was unable to be removed from underneath the vehicle.

Emergency services raced to the scene and closed off the A7 road and Market Place in Selkirk as fire fighters worked to free her from the lorry owned by Leicester-based packaged chemicals logistics provider H.W.Coates.

An hour after the accident an RAF Sea King Helicopter and flew into the Philiphaugh area of the town around one mile away.

The woman was transferred from the accident scene to the waiting helicopter where she was airlifted to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for emergency treatment to her serious injuries.

The accident scene remained closed for several hours while a full accident investigation took place.

Diversions were put into place to avoid Selkirk town centre and caused large tail backs in surrounding streets and on the northern

approach to the town on the A7.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Police are in attendance following a road traffic collision at Market Place, Selkirk, around 3.30pm today, involving a pedestrian and a lorry.

“The elderly female pedestrian is being treated for serious injuries and the A7 is currently closed while emergency services respond to the incident.”
