93-year-old riding tricycle hit, killed by teen driver, Merrimac Police say

A 93-year-old was hit and killed while riding a tricycle near where he lived Saturday, according to the Merrimac Police Department.

The man was identified[1] by police as Robert Whitcomb of Merrimac.

The crash happened around 5 p.m. on Bartlett Street on Saturday, police said. Whitcomb was taken to Portsmouth Hospital where he later died from his injuries, police said.

The driver was a teenager, police said. They remained on the scene and cooperated with police.

“A very sad day for all who knew this special person,” Cynthia Mead Whitcomb[3], Robert Whitcomb’s daughter-in-law, wrote on Facebook.

The crash remains under investigation by the Merrimac Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Section (CARS) with assistance from the Essex District Attorney’s Office.
