Biker dies in A50 crash that shut road for eight hours

A biker has died after a tragic crash that saw the A50 closed for around eight hours. StokeonTrentLive previously reported emergency services had been called to the stretch in Longton at around 7.30pm last night, July 2.

Now Staffordshire Police have confirmed full details of the crash – including that a motorcyclist in his 30s has died. His black Lex Moto bike had struck a roadside barrier on the eastbound carriageway.

Now the force is appealing for witnesses, having shut both sides of the A50 near where the incident happened. The road only fully reopened at around 4am, it is understood.

A Staffordshire Police spokesperson said: “We are appealing for witnesses after a man died in a collision on the A50 near Longton last night (Sunday 2 July). We were called just before 7.30pm to the A50 eastbound carriageway following reports of a collision.

“Officers attended along with colleagues from West Midlands Ambulance Service. Upon arrival, a black Lex Moto motorcycle was believed to have been involved in a collision with the roadside barrier.

“Despite the best efforts of paramedics, the rider, a man in his 30s, was pronounced deceased at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

“To assist with the investigation, both sides of the A50 were closed temporarily, with traffic being diverted. Officers from the Staffordshire and West Midlands Serious Collision Investigation Unit are now investigating the circumstances leading up to the collision.

“Anyone who witnessed the collision, saw the vehicle beforehand or who may have relevant CCTV or dashcam footage is asked to get in touch with us. You can contact the Collision Investigation Unit directly by emailing [email protected][2] quoting incident number 622 of 2 July. Alternatively, you can contact the force through Live Chat on our website or by calling 101.”
