Driver charged with OVI after striking three utility poles: Westlake Police Blotter

WESTLAKE, Ohio –

OVI crash: Detroit Road

Several callers to 911 at 1:30 a.m. on July 1 reported an SUV crashed into a utility pole on Detroit Road.

Arriving officers discovered that a Ford Edge had struck three poles before coming to a final rest. The female driver was already out of the car being tended to by bystanders.

The investigating officers noted the driver was conscious and showed signs of intoxication. They estimated that the vehicle was traveling at 40 mph before driving off the roadway.

The Westlake Fire Department treated the driver for non-life-threatening injuries and transported the Westlake resident to UH St. John Medical Center for further evaluation. The woman was cited with failure to control and OVI.

Vehicle thefts

The police department is investigating three car theft reports from July 1, all of which involved vehicles being left unlocked with the keys inside.

A Sleepy Hollow Drive resident at 7:30 a.m. reported waking up to find their pickup truck had been stolen out of their driveway overnight.

A Hummingbird Circle resident at 8:39 a.m. reported that their Lexus SUV was stolen from their home driveway.

At 10 a.m., officers took a third report about a pickup truck being stolen from an Adams Lane driveway.

Westlake detectives on July 5 found the Sleepy Hollow Drive truck parked unoccupied on E. 143rd Street in East Cleveland. It was damaged and riddled with bullet holes. The vehicle was towed and processed for evidence.

Felony drug possession: Columbia Road

An officer at 10:30 a.m. on July 1 stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on Columbia Road at I-90.

The driver admitted he did not have a valid license, according to a police press release. While speaking with the 32-year-old man, an officer noticed drug paraphernalia sitting in plain view. The Cleveland man had cut straws with residue and a small amount of white powder folded up in U.S. currency. The suspected fentanyl was sent to a lab for verification.

Officers arrested the man and charged him with felony possession of drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving without a license.

OVI crash: Crocker Road

A 911 caller at 1:40 a.m. on July 2 reported a car crash on Crocker Road at Hummingbird Circle.

Officers found two vehicles collided, sending one into the nearby tree line. Two passengers were transported to a hospital with injuries that were listed as minor.

A police investigation revealed that the involved vehicles had been traveling together and were most likely speeding when the crash occurred, according to a police statement. When one vehicle attempted to pass the other, it clipped the rear of the first car. Both drivers appeared intoxicated and were field tested. The at-fault driver, a 20-year-old man from Westlake, was arrested and charged with OVI, failure to maintain assured clear distance, and underage consumption of alcohol. He submitted to a breath test and was found to be over 2½ times the legal limit for someone 21 or older.

The other driver, a 19-year-old Westlake man, was field tested and arrested for OVI. He refused a breath test at the Westlake jail and was immediately placed under a license suspension. He was charged with OVI and underage consumption of alcohol.

Warrant: Dover Center Road

A man at 11:45 p.m. on June 30 called the Westlake Police Department to report that his vehicle just died at the intersection of Dover Center Road and Hilliard Boulevard.

He also said that he was wanted on a warrant out of Ottawa County. Officers arrived and confirmed that the 26-year-old Westlake resident had a felony warrant for drug possession.

Westlake officers arrested the man and turned him over to Ottawa County deputies. The vehicle was towed out of the intersection.
