Driver taken to hospital after crash on A19 at Easington
Emergency services attended the A19 near Easington at around 4.20am following reports of a one-vehicle collision.
One lane of the A19 was closed for around three hours to allow police and ambulance crews to attend the scene.
During the closure, traffic queues built to around two miles long, with drivers waiting around 20 minutes extra on the A19 at the peak of the closure.
The North East Ambulance Service has confirmed that it attended the collision, and took one person to hsopital.
A spokesperson for the ambulance service said: "We were called just after 4.20am this morning to a one vehicle road traffic incident on the A19 north bound at Peterlee.
"We dispatched a double crewed ambulance and one patient was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital."
Several reports initially circulated suggesting that the collision involved a van crashing off the road - but these haven't been verified by Durham Police.
The Northern Echo has contacted Durham Police for a comment and will update the piece once a statement becomes available.
