Fire crews race to M74 near Hamilton after lorry comes off road on busy motorway

A busy motorway near Hamilton[1] reportedly remains disrupted after a lorry veered off the road just before 10.30am on Thursday morning (July 20).

Fire crews, police and paramedics raced to the M74[2] northbound following reports the vehicle went off the road, near junction 6 (Hamilton) and junction 5 (Raith Interchange).

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service[3] sent three appliances as well as specialist resources to the scene where a casualty was being checked over by paramedics.

A spokesperson for the SFRS said: “We were alerted at 10.26am on Thursday, July 20 to reports of a lorry which came off the road at the M74 northbound, near to Junction 6 Hamilton and Junction 5 Raith Interchange.

“Firefighters assisted emergency service partners and one casualty was in the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service.

“Crews left the scene at approximately 12.07pm.”

It is understood a lane on the busy motorway remains blocked following the earlier incident.

Transport Scotland tweeted: “#M74 N/B J6 – 5 – Lane 1 remains blocked to allow for recovery of a vehicle from earlier RTC.

“Take care on approach.”

Traffic Scotland confirmed traffic is ‘extremely slow’ on this stretch of the motorway with travel time up to 35 minutes.

Further up along the M74 northbound, junction 12 is closed due to ’emergency bridge repair works’, adding to travel chaos for motorists this afternoon.

Road Policing Scotland tweeted: “MAJOR MOTORWAY ROAD CLOSURE Due to emergency bridge repair works we have implemented a FULL CLOSURE of the #M74 North at #J12 with the #J11 on ramp also closed. Follow @trafficscotland for updates.”

Traffic Scotland added: “The #M74 is currently closed Northbound between J12 – J10 due to the need for bridge inspection works to be carried out. Traffic is being taken off at J12, along the B7078 and re-joining the #M74 at J10.”
