Five seriously injured, including two children, after wrong-way driver crash after police chase

Two children, two women, an a man were rushed to three different hospitals with serious injuries, on Sunday afternoon after a horror head-on crash with a stolen car, on the A47 Heartlands Parkway in Nechells, Birmingham (30th April).
The Midlands Air Ambulance was scrambled and landed near the Tarmac depot.Update at 14:00 on Tuesday: An ambulance spokesperson writes:
“We were called at 12.52pm on Sunday to a road traffic collision involving two cars at the junction of the A47 and Heartlands Parkway, Bromford Bridge in Birmingham.
“Five ambulances, two paramedic officers, a MERIT trauma doctor and critical care paramedic and the Midland Air Ambulance Critical Care Car from Cosford attended the scene. Upon arrival we found five patients from the two cars.
Forensics worked through the night to establish the cause.
“A man and a woman who were the drivers of each vehicle had sustained serious injuries. They received treatment at the scene before being conveyed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital under blue light conditions for further treatment.

“A woman and two children who were passengers in the second car were assessed by ambulance staff and had sustained potentially serious injuries. The two children were conveyed to Birmingham Childrens Hospital and the woman was conveyed to Heartlands Hospital for further assessments.”
A stolen car was being chased but police had to abandon it due to safety concerns. The car thief then continued onto the wrong side of the road (the westbound A47), before plowing head-on into a family car carrying three adults and two kids.
The crash happened near the Tarmac Depot on the Heartlands Parkway in Nechells.
It is now confirmed the crash happened shortly before 1PM, with three fire engines, the air ambulance, land ambulance crews, and police attending.
An IOPC spokesperson said they’re aware of the incident.
The driver of the stolen car has been arrested on suspicion of car theft.
A Police spokesperson told us on Sunday:
”We are currently at the scene of a collision on Heartlands Parkway after a car failed to stop for police.”Officers followed the vehicle but abandoned this for safety reasons. The vehicle continued onto the wrong side of the road and collided with another vehicle and set on fire. The driver has been arrested on suspicion of car theft.”Five people – three adults and two children – were in the other car. One adult is walking wounded and another adult and the two children have been taken to hospital.”The road remains close while emergency services remain at the scene.”
The ambulance service have confirmed five people, including two children, were rushed to hospital with serious injuries.
Police told us the fire service initially believed the car was on fire, but this was likely to be steam or hot oil giving off the impression of smoke.
We also contacted the IOPC (the office that deals with police conduct, including serious crashes following police pursuits), and they told us:
“We are not presently investigating. We were notified of the incident this afternoon (Sunday) by West Midlands Police. We sent an investigator to the police post incident procedure to carry out an initial assessment. We will assess a referral from the force in due course before deciding whether the IOPC needs to be involved in any investigation.
