Funeral details for teen killed in horror M8 crash in Cork revealed
A teenager who was tragically killed in a horror crash on the M8 motorway in Cork[1] will be laid to rest on Wednesday.
Johnny Foley, 16, from Togher, died after the car he was a passenger in drove the wrong way down the M8 motorway and hit another driver head-on.[2]
The horror crash happened at around 1am on the M8 at Ballybeg, Mitchelstown on Saturday. The teen, who was a front seat passenger in the car which is suspected to have been stolen, was pronounced dead at the scene while the driver and three other passengers were taken to hospital.
A woman in her 30s, who is believed to have been travelling home from a late shift of work, was seriously injured when her car was involved in the head-on collision with the car in which Johnny was a passenger.
The teen’s death notice on RIP.ie states his remains reposed in Sullivan’s Funeral Home, Turners Cross, from 4pm to 5pm on Tuesday.
His funeral mass will take place on Wednesday, July 5 at 11am in the Church of the Assumption, Ballyphehane, followed by a burial at St. James’ Cemetery, Chetwynd.
He is survived by his parents Michael and Maggie; step-mum Lilly-Ann; siblings Michael, Luke, James, Mary-Ellen, and Lisa; and will be sadly missed by his grandparents James and Bridget; aunts; uncles; cousins, and a wide circle of friends.
Gardaí referred the crash to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission[4] as officers had interacted with the car carrying Johnny and four other teenagers before it entered the motorway. Officers are investigating whether the vehicle, which had earlier been reported to gardai as stolen, was on the wrong side of the motorway.
The driver of the car, a teenager aged 17, who is known to Gardaí, is understood to be originally from Blanchardstown, Dublin, but had been living in Cork in recent times.
Meanwhile, tributes continue to pour in for the victim on social media with one pal writing: “Please Johnny come back, you were my best friend. God always takes away the best. I’m lost for words today. Rest in peace my best friend.”
A relative posted on Facebook: “RIP Johnny cuz, loved and missed brother. Only fresh home you were and was only talking to you yesterday about going to the gym. What is this world coming to? The legends never die, taken too young from this world. Johnny you’ll get a proper send off.”
While another posted: “Can’t believe I am writing this. RIP my beautiful nephew Johnny, you are going to be missed so much. OUR JOHNNY, we all love you so much and our hearts are breaking. Sleep tight kid.”
