GoFundMe fundraises for Keoni Hubbard, Boy Scout dead in N.H. boating incident

The Massachusetts Boy Scout killed in a boating incident[1] at a New Hampshire camp was commemorated in a GoFundMe[2] created for the boy’s funeral, calling the 11-year-old a “beautiful, kind, wonderful boy.”

Keoni Hubbard, from Troop 119 Lexington, died in a boating incident on Lake Manning in Gilmanton, New Hampshire on Friday, Spirit of Adventure Council[3], a regional council of the Boy Scouts of America[4], wrote on Facebook.

New Hampshire State Police[5] responded to the incident at about 2:15 p.m. Friday. Police said Keoni was out on the water when the incident occurred and died of his injuries at the scene. He had been in New Hampshire with his group from out of state for the week, police said.

Anna Rohrbough, the creator of the GoFundMe[7] for Keoni’s funeral and memorial services who identified herself as Keoni’s aunt, stated she was with her brother and the Hubbard family, including their 15-year-old daughter, in Lexington as of July 10.

“Keoni was a beautiful 11 year old boy that had pure kindness in him. I loved him dearly,” Rohrbough said. The aunt then shared a message from the Hubbard family, who asked for privacy as they grieve, according to the GoFundMe.

“Our beautiful, kind, wonderful boy Keoni died Friday afternoon in a boating accident while away at Camp. Our hearts are forever broken by the loss of our Keoni. Beloved by his family and friends, Keoni’s spirit and empathy for others resonated with all who love and admire him,” the statement read.

“Keoni was simply the best - a selfless child who truly found joy in the happiness of others... Hold and hug your children, and tell them you love them,” the family’s statement said.

The GoFundMe surpassed its $15,000 goal within 20 hours of its creation, reaching more than $20,000 by 3 p.m. on Tuesday. Rohrbough asked for help for the family in the form of donations, and said to message her for an address for those wishing to send a card or note.

Jonathan Pleva, the interim Scout executive of The Spirit of Adventure Council, had asked people “keep the Hubbard family, Troop 119, as well as the Lexington Scouting Community in your thoughts and prayers.”
