Huge M6 delays as lorry overturns before car collides with barrier and HGV
Motorists faced severe delays on a stretch of the M6 in Cheshire today (July 7) after two major incidents on both sides of the carriageway.
Emergency services were first called to an overturned lorry on the southbound carriageway between J20 for Lymm and J19 at Knutsford shortly after 5.30am. Three fire engines, plus a major rescue unit, raced to the scene along with police.
The incident resulted in a diesel leak while emergency repair works were also required, resulting in a lane closure and queues stretching for 10 miles. A spokesperson for Cheshire Constabulary said: “At around 5.30am police an incident involving an overturned lorry on the M6. Police attended and one person was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.”
Around an hour and a half later, a car collided with the central reservation and a HGV between J20 and J21 on the northbound carriageway. A spokesperson for Cheshire Constabulary said: “Shortly after 7am on Friday 7 July, police were called following reports of a collision on the M6 northbound between junction 20 and 21.
“The incident involved a car which had collided with the central reservation barrier, and a HGV. Paramedics attended and the male driver of the car was taken to hospital as a precaution.
“Lane closures were put in place while emergency services dealt with the incident, but these were lifted by 8.30am.”
