Lorry and van smash near Birmingham Airport on M42 leaves woman with ‘life changing injuries’
A woman has been airlifted to hospital after sustaining potentially life-changing injuries in an M42 crash[1]. The collision, between a lorry and a van, happened on the northbound carriageway near Birmingham Airport[2] at around 1.40pm today (July 25).
Firefighters extricated the crash victim, who was a passenger in the van, from the vehicle. She was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital[3] for urgent treatment.
The driver of the van, a man, was assessed and treated for non-serious injuries before being conveyed by land ambulance to the same hospital. No other injuries were reported.
The northbound carriageway, between J6 and J7, was shut following the crash and remains closed at time of publication. The M42 southbound was closed for a short period to allow the air ambulance to land and later take off.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service[5] spokesperson said: “We were called to reports of an RTC on the M42 northbound between J6 and J7, near Bickenhill, at around 1.40pm. An ambulance, paramedic officer and Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance were sent to the scene.
