Massachusetts Boy Scout killed in boating accident at N.H. camp
The victim of a fatal boating accident in Gilmanton, New Hampshire on Friday has been identified as a Boy Scout from Lexington, Massachusetts.
According to New Hampshire State Police, at about 2:15 p.m. Friday, police received a call about a boating accident on Manning Lake.
The boy, who has not been identified by name, was out on the water when the accident occurred and died of his injuries at the scene. He had been in New Hampshire with his group from out of state for the week, police said.
The Daniel Webster Council, a regional governing body for the Boy Scouts of America, confirmed the accident on Facebook on Saturday.
“We are heartbroken to confirm the death of a Scout yesterday following a tragic accident on Manning Lake in Gilmanton,” the council wrote. “We offer our deepest condolences to the Scout’s family and ask everyone to please join in keeping this young man and his loved ones in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
Lexington School Superintendent Julie Hackett confirmed that the boy had been a student at Clarke Middle School in a letter to district families, Boston 25[3] reported. Hackett said multiple students witnessed the accident and that the district would work with Lexington Human Services to provide grief counseling for students and staff.
“Our hearts are with the victim’s family, as well as the Clarke school community and all those impacted by this tragic event,” Hackett wrote, according to the news station. “We are blessed to be part of a loving, caring community, and we come together in times of need. I know that you will continue to be there for one another, and you will keep all those affected by this tragedy in your thoughts and prayers.”
The accident is under investigation by New Hampshire State Police.
The accident was one of three unrelated fatal incidents in New Hampshire waters on Friday, police said. Friday afternoon, boaters discovered the body of a 40-year-old man on the Piscatuquog River.
In addition, at 8:45 p.m. Friday, a swimmer was reported missing on Middle Pea Porridge Pond in Madison. The swimmer, Amy Posocco, 41, of Beverly, Massachusetts, had been swimming with family when she went missing.
A dive team found Posocco’s body about 90 feet from shore. The incident is under investigation but the death is considered accidental, police said.
