Passenger killed, 4 hurt when vehicle tried to pass on shoulder of I-287, cops say
One person was killed and four others seriously injured in a crash Tuesday night when a driver attempted to pass another vehicle on the shoulder of Interstate 287 in Somerset County, authorities said.
The crash took place at about 7:30 p.m. near milepost 18.4 in Bridgewater after the driver of a southbound vehicle maneuvered his vehicle off the left side of the highway to try to improperly pass another vehicle, according to State Police[1].
When the vehicle reentered the road, it struck the front of the second car, slid across the road and veered off the interstate to the right. The vehicle then went up an embankment and struck trees, officials said
A passenger in the vehicle, Lissanne Reyes Mejia, 35, of Perth Amboy, died of her injuries.
The 24-year-old Linden man driving the Infiniti and three of his other passenger were hospitalized with serious injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was not hurt.
State Police closed the southbound local lanes of Interstate 287 for about five hours during the investigation, which is ongoing
No charges have been filed as of 10:15 a.m. Wednesday.
