Speed limit set to be cut on A470 dual carriageway in Llandudno

The speed limit is set to be cut on a stretch of dual carriageway on the A470 in Llandudno[1]. Aberconwy MS Janet Finch-Saunders said that a series of road safety measures are being introduced on Conway Road between Links Hotel roundabout and Vicarage Road roundabout.

This comes after a safety campaign following the death of Finnley Jones on this stretch last year.[2] Mrs Finch-Saunders met officials from North Wales Police[3] (NWP) and Conwy[4] County Borough Council (CCBC) at the site.

They revealed that a number of measures are being brought in on that section to improve safety.

These are:

  • Conway Road will reduce from 40 mph to 30 mph in September.
  • NWP will conduct further speed surveys once the new speed limit is in place.
  • CCBC will investigate adjustment to the radar speed camera currently in operation so that it displays either a capped speed or a safety message once the speed limit is exceeded, rather than the drivers’ actual speed.
  • CCBC to work in partnership with Transport for Wales towards Active Travel improvements which will impact Conway Road

Conwy’s Environment, Roads and Facilities Service said: “We can confirm that we are arranging a Traffic Regulation Order to reduce the speed limit between the two roundabouts on Conway Road, Llandudno (A470) following the usual legal process.”

The Aberconwy MS said: “It is great to hear that much needed highway safety improvements are being made. Whilst I still believe that a speed camera is essential, I am confident that the list of actions I have secured so far is still going to have a positive impact. Residents can be reassured that I will continue to act on this case until such a time that the highway is better for all users.”

Across Wales the default speed limit for 30mph residential roads is set to change from September to 20mph. This has been introduced by the Welsh Government to reduce road deaths but has come under fire over the potential impact on the economy.

Councils can create ‘exception’ roads that will not change from 30mph to 20mph. Four councils have done this in North Wales do far[6] but Conwy has not yet revealed its list of roads.
