Stolen car launches off California cliffside, lands on roof: Video
SAN FRANCISCO – A car full of people launched off the top of a cliffside public stairway, flipping through the air and crashing through a tree[1] before landing on its roof on the street below.
The vehicle, a stolen white Lincoln sedan, smashed through a barrier at the top of the Sanchez Street Stairs without slowing down[2]. After landing in the intersection of Sanchez and 19th streets at the bottom of the cliff below, the five people in the car fled before help arrived.
The crash, all caught on security videos, happened Saturday. As of Monday, San Francisco police still had not revealed who owns the car and continued to look for the occupants, NBC’s Bay Area KNTV reported[3].
ABC’s KGO7 News reported[4] that police had confirmed the car belonged to a man who was carjacked shortly before the accident just a few blocks away.
San Francisco fire officials termed the crash a “non-injury collision,” Fox News in San Francisco reported[5].
Video showed bystanders rushing to help those inside the car. Once they were freed from the vehicle, they fled on foot.
In the video, a woman who was inside the car can be heard repeatedly apologizing, KRON-TV reported[6].
A witness told ABC’s KGO-TV that one of the occupants was telling the others they needed to move quickly.
“One phrase that I still remember was like, ‘We got three minutes. We need to run!’ Bunch of stuff came out of the car,” a witness identified only as Giorgi told KGO-TV. “I saw, I think, two tasers and then the cops in the end. They also found a gun.”
Firefighters and police arrived in less than four minutes. By then the people in the car were all gone.
