Surrey RCMP traffic enforcement officers have been patrolling a stretch of road in the Campbell Heights’ area since a widely shared video surfaced in May.

In the social media clip from mid-May, a 1937 Chevrolet is seen stunting in the 2700-block of 192nd Street before the driver loses control and slams into the side of a semi-truck while big crowds watch from the sidelines. Investigators looked into the crash and have recommended criminal charges against the driver.

Since then, the traffic unit has kept a close eye on that part of 192nd Street, in a largely industrial area near the Surrey-Langley border, and busted more people racing and stunting there.

On June 16, officers pulled six cars off the road and issued 21 violation tickets for speeding, excessive speed, vehicle defects and other infractions.

Five of those fines were for excessive speed, defined as going more than 40 km/h over the limit, which automatically means the vehicle is impounded for a week. One driver was impaired and was hit with a three-day roadside prohibition and impoundment.

“We want to make it clear that Surrey RCMP has zero tolerance for street racing and dangerous driving behaviours that place members of our community at risk, said Sgt. Jason Barrett of the traffic unit in a news release. “Individuals who participate in these activities pose risks to everyone on the road, as well as all the spectators who attend.”

Barrett said officers will continue to patrol and crack down on street racing, and are encouraging the public not to attend.

He noted 14 people have died in traffic crashes in Surrey so far this year, with speed being a factor in a majority of them.
