Teen girl fighting for life after van crashes into steep ravine

A teenage girl is fighting for her life after a crash on Friday night (July 7). The incident involved a van falling into a deep ravine, Lancashire Police say.

The incident happened around 7pm when the Mercedes Sprinter van came off the A56 Accrington Bypass slip road at Huncoat. It went through a metal barrier and into the ravine.

A 15-year-old girl, who was a passenger in the van, suffered life threatening injuries and was rushed to Manchester Children's Hospital. A man in his 20s, who was driving the van, suffered serious injuries including a number of fractures and was taken to hospital. His injuries are not life threatening, police say.

Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of the incident to come forward.

Sgt Phil Baxendale, of the Specialist Operations Road Policing Unit at Lancashire Constabulary, said: “This collision has left a young woman fighting for her life and I would appeal to anyone who either saw the collision itself, or the van beforehand, or who has any footage which could assist in our investigation, to get in touch.”
