MORELAND HILLS, Ohio

Squad call, motor vehicle accident, attempt to locate: South Woodland Road

A call transferred from the Cuyahoga Emergency Communications System (CECOMS) on the afternoon of June 27 indicated that a person’s iPhone had been involved in a severe car crash, leaving only a repeating automated message for dispatchers, whose attempts to call the owner went straight to voicemail.

But first responders could not locate the crash, showing coordinates on Route 87 west of Chagrin River Road.

With assistance from Hunting Valley officers, police found the owner near Hogsback Hill Cemetery just after 2 p.m. and learned that she was trying to find her phone after it had fallen off a car, possibly getting run over by another motorist.

Traffic stop: Pinetree, South Woodland roads

The driver of a Honda was stopped and advised for speeding at 67 mph in a 40-mph zone around 3 a.m. July 2, with no citation in what looked like a medical emergency.

Neighbor trouble: Giles Road

A caller reported around 9 a.m. June 30 that the neighbors keep putting their stuff up against his fence. About 40 minutes later, a styrofoam canoe was removed from its resting spot on the fence, as per his request.

Complaints-fireworks: numerous locations

Police received several complaints about fireworks beginning around 9:15 p.m. June 30 on Berkeley Avenue, where residents were advised about the law and agreed to comply.

Then came another call at 8:12 p.m. July 1 about intermittent fireworks going off on Wiltshire Road, with the same anonymous caller reporting within 10 minutes they had stopped.

On July 4, calls came in from Meadowhill Lane at 9:45 p.m., then 10:23 p.m. on Chagrin Boulevard between Murwood Drive and Giles Road, with all parties being advised and agreeing to comply.

Noise complaint: Miles Road

A caller reported at 12:55 a.m. July 4 that the house at the top of the hill was making a lot of noise, part of an ongoing problem, involving a male outside playing his guitar, most likely on the back porch.

Police reported at 1:13 a.m. that all was quiet.

Complaints-general: Aspenwood Drive

Officers reported they were out with a crew from an area tree service company that was illegally cutting down trees around 9:30 a.m. June 29. They were told to stop working until permits were obtained.

Special attention: Mill Creek Lane

A resident reported at 6:14 p.m. June 26 that about 45 minutes earlier, she found a Nissan parked the wrong way in front of her house with a man sleeping inside. When she and a neighbor went out and knocked on the car window, the occupant said he was a realtor, very tired and just taking a nap.

He then drove off, prompting the resident to request extra patrols since her husband was out of town.

Personal welfare: Hunting Trail

A caller on 9-1-1 reported a woman “carrying on and causing trouble” in his home around 9:30 p.m. June 28, adding that he needed to physically get rid of her. He sounded confused, saying that he’d seen her before and she was now hiding in the hallway.

The 24-hour caregiver then got on the line and said the man was a “fall risk” who had just gotten up after he had been sitting. She said she would speak to officers at the door after he was secure.

Personal welfare: Chagrin Boulevard

Police checked on a Cleveland woman who was walking down the hill towards Chagrin Falls with a rolling suitcase at 8 a.m. June 28. She said she had been staying with her mother in Bedford Heights until she was taken to Ahuja Medical Center for an evaluation.

After that, she rounded up her belongings and started walking to a friend’s house near Warren.

She then received a courtesy ride to Trumbull County.

— The day before (June 27) police were called to the Moreland Hills Sunoco at Chagrin and Route 91 around 5:15 p.m. to check on the welfare of a man believed to be in his 60s, reportedly taking blue and orange pills and drinking something out of a brown paper bag. He had driven off prior to police arrival.

Car crash: Miles Road

A Cleveland Water Department inspector reported that someone had backed into him at 10:48 a.m. June 27 at a home across from the Look About Lodge, with no injuries and unspecified property damage.

Animal-miscellaneous: Ridgecreek Trail

A caller reported around 9:30 a.m. July 3 she was going to be gone for about 10 minutes, but when she left there were three sickly raccoons by their garage.

Shortly before 10 a.m., a responding officer said one was dispatched and placed in the woods.

Animal-miscellaneous: Chagrin Boulevard

Police were called to remove a hawk from the roadway around 5:30 p.m. July 2, but arrived to find a turkey instead.

Harassing communications: Chagrin River Road

Officials at the Western Reserve Land Conservancy filed an unspecified  harassment complaint  on the afternoon of June 29.

Fraud: Sterncrest Drive

A report was taken at the police station around noon June 28 for a resident who suspected unspecified fraud.
