The 77-year-old was driving a blue Kia Ceed when it crashed with a white Citroen Relay van around 3:15pm on Wednesday.
The 60-year-old woman driving the van was rushed to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary[2] with non-life threatening injuries.
The much-loved grandad’s family have now paid tribute following the tragedy.
In a statement, they said: “Fred was a loving father and husband, who was loved by his grandchildren.
“We would appreciate the public’s understanding that we would prefer to grieve in private.”
Cops are continuing to probe the tragic crash and have urged anyone with information to come forward.
Sergeant Peter Henderson of the North East Road Policing Unit[3] said: “Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by this collision.
“We are continuing to work to establish the full circumstances and would urge anyone with information or dash-cam footage to get in touch.
