Speed cameras are being installed along one of the most dangerous roads in the Lancaster area.

Twelve average speed cameras are being placed on the A6 from Junction 33 to the Lancaster Pointer Roundabout, through Scotforth and Galgate.

This follows two deaths and 32 serious injuries on the road between 2012 and 2016.

The work, which cost £1.2m, is due to be finished by the end of August.

“The route has a record of deaths and injuries where excess speed was a factor, and we’ve already done a lot of work to make it safer including installing LED cats eyes, high reflectivity road markings, signs and crash barriers,” said County Councillor Rupert Swarbrick, Lancashire County Council cabinet member for highways and transport.

“There are currently eight routes already covered by average speed camera enforcement systems in Lancashire, which were installed in 2017 and 2018. Initial evaluation shows there has been a reduction in collisions of up to 86 per cent on these routes.

“We have received funding from the Department for Transport to install more average speed cameras on five routes in Lancashire as part of a national programme aimed at improving safety along the 50 most dangerous stretches of A-roads in England.”
