A46 fatal crashes: Two dead after separate collisions on road two hours and 15 miles apart
Police investigations will continue on Thursday (August 31) after two fatal collisions on the A46 last night. The two separate crashes happened on the A46 at Ashchurch, near Tewkesbury[1], and on the A46 near Evesham[2].
The first incident happened at around 4pm on Wednesday (August 30) when a motorcyclist in his 20s from Tewkesbur[3]y died in a collision with a van close to the the MOD base at St Barbara’s Barracks in Ashchurch. He had been riding a black Honda motorbike which was in collision with a white Ford Transit van.
An air ambulance was called but the man was pronounced dead at the scene[4]. The van driver was uninjured.
The A46 was closed in both directions for accident investigation work and fuel spillage overnight from junction nine of the M5 to the Teddington Hands roundabout at the junction with the A435. The road is no longer marked as closed.
Gloucestershire police[6] said on Wednesday: “We can confirm a man died in a collision between a motorbike and van on the A46 at Ashchurch earlier. Anyone with dashcam that could help is asked to come forward.”
The second A46 fatal crash happened just before 6pm on Wednesday near the Twyford island in Evesham, Worcestershire[7]. This is around 15 miles from the earlier fatal incicent near Ashchurch.
The A46 was closed in both directions[8] due to accident investigation work between A44 The Squires (Evesham Country Park, Evesham) and B439 Station Road (Salford Priors roundabout, Salford Priors). National Highways said it reopened at around 2am on Thursday.
West Mercia Police said on Wednesday: “Motorists are advised to avoid the A46 near the Twyford island in Evesham and expect delays following a fatal collision just after 6pm this evening. The road is closed at the roundabout while emergency services attend.”
No further information on the Evesham incident has been issued by emergency services. We will update this story when we know more.
