A5 closed overnight as yet another lorry hits railway bridge and spills fuel across road
The A5 was closed for several hours after a lorry hit the infamous railway bridge outside of Hinckley[1] overnight. The bridge, which has resulted in a multitude of crashes and incidents over the years and was once dubbed the country’s ‘most-bashed’, was hit by a HGV shortly after midnight on Tuesday morning.
The crash flipped the trailer onto its side and resulted in fuel from the lorry leaking across the highway, with Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service[2], Leicestershire Police[3], and Highways teams being called out to the scene. The A5[4] was closed until just before 5am while emergency services worked to clear the road and ensure no damage was made to the bridge.
Leicestershire Fire Control confirmed nobody was injured in the crash, with the fire service being called out to tackle the fuel leak and to ensure the vehicle was safe for the police to recover. Once this was sorted, the Fire Service handed the scene over to the police and Highways teams to clear up the road and recover the HGV.
A spokesperson for Leicestershire Fire Control said: “We were called out after a lorry hit the railway bridge on the A5 between Nutts Lane Roundabout to Dodswell Road Roundabout. We were called to the scene to help with a fuel leak from the vehicle, with the HGV’s trailer also flipped onto its side in the crash.
“The A5 was closed with ourselves and police in attendance, with fire service staff attempting to stem the fuel leak from the HGV while police called for the lorry’s recovery. Nobody was injured in the incident.
“We left the scene at 2.07am and left it in the hands of police and highways teams, who were tasked with cleaning the fuel off the road’s surface. The road was later reopened at 4.59am.”
Leicestershire Police were approached for comment but declined to provide one.
