BREAKING: Long delays and motorway CLOSED in Greater Manchester after major crashes – latest updates
Motorists are facing long delays on two of Greater Manchester’s busiest roads following crashes this afternoon (August 1). The M61[1] is currently closed northbound between junctions eight and nine, near Chorley, Lancashire[2].
It’s affecting drivers heading north from Bolton[3]. National Highways says the closure follows a multi-vehicle collision, with three-mile queues approaching the area.
A spokesperson added: “Emergency services are at the scene and National Highways patrols are assessing reported infrastructure damage to a large section of central and nearside barrier. A bridge may also have been struck.”

Meanwhile, drivers are also facing delays near Bury[5], following a collision on the A56 Edenfield Bypass. There are queues northbound on the M66[6] from junction three, as well as on Walmersley Road and Pilsworth Road.
A Transport for Greater Manchester spokesperson added: “Please allow more time if headed this way and consider an alternative route.” Further details on the nature of the incidents are yet to be confirmed.
