Clean-up operation on M32 to keep road closed throughout day

A clean-up operation after a lorry overturned and shed its load onto a busy motorway is expected to keep the road closed "throughout the day". The incident happened on the M32 in Bristol this morning near the junction with the M4.

The lorry carrying stones and sand overturned, causing the contents to spill onto the motorway along with fuel. A closure has been set up between junction 19 of the M4 and junction one of the M32 at Hambrook, with a diversion put in place[1].

National Highways has confirmed the lorry has been recovered from the scene. However, due to damage caused to the motorway from the incident, more work is required to be carried out.

National Highways said: "Once clear up of the debris and diesel has taken place, the carriageway will need inspecting for any damage caused by the diesel spillage. At present there is no estimate for when the carriageway will reopen."

As well as the M32 closure, the M4 junction 19 westbound exit and a section of the junction 19 roundabout have been closed. Lane three of the M32 northbound between junction 1 and the M4 is also closed due to the debris from the crash.

There are delays of around 45 minutes and approximately six miles of traffic on the westbound side of the M4 between junction 18 and junction 20 as a result of the M32 closure.
