A driver has handed himself into the police after a horror crash on a residential road that involved seven vehicles.
The incident took place shortly before midnight on Saturday, August 12, when a car collided with a number of stationary vehicles in Kent Road, Old Town.
Nearby residents were shocked to hear loud bangs from outside as the car hit several of the parked cars and vans.
Malcolm Brownley who is a committee member at the nearby Ashford Road Club was finishing up with the group’s weekly meeting when members heard the commotion.
Swindon Advertiser: The car struck several other vehicles before stopping.
“Everyone started to rush outside because the noise was immense and I ran out and saw that the white Vauxhall Astra had flipped onto its side,” he said.
“My main concern was someone being badly injured given that club members were walking up that road just before the crash.
“The mind boggles, it could have been a disaster given how many people had been walking around the area minutes earlier.”
The 62-year-old and his friends went to help any victims but saw that only the driver appeared to be involved.
“We were all going out with the defibrillator and the first aid kit to try and help but then I saw a man climbing out of the driver’s window,” said Malcolm.
Swindon Advertiser: Numerous vehicles were damaged when the car crashed on Kent Road.
“He crawled out of the window and looked a little injured, dragging his leg somewhat before disappearing up an alleyway.
“It had been four huge bangs because he hit at least six vehicles before landing where he ended up.”
The incident has worried Malcolm deeply who no longer feels safe in the area in which he lives and socialises.
“The whole thing was horrendous and very frighting and it makes me feel very unsafe because there are no speed restrictions so cars always tend to do excess speeds around here,” he said.
