Football fans hold moving tribute to ‘murdered’ bus driver Gordon Stirling

FOOTBALL fans held a touching tribute to "murdered" bus driver Gordon Stirling during a Premiership clash.

Gordon Stirling, 23, died after a white Ford Transit van crashed into his single-decker Stagecoach bus[1] on the A77 in East Ayrshire[2] last Monday.

The young driver[3] was raced to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital[4] after the smash, where he died five days later.

His hometown club Kilmarnock[5] have since paid tribute to him during today's Premiership clash with Motherwell[6] at Fir Park.

Gordon's name and picture were on a black banner above a stand during the game.

Fans from both sides also held an applause during the 23rd minute for their fellow supporter, whose death is being treated as a suspected murder[7].

The club paid tribute ahead of the match and called on fans to take part in the applause[8].

A statement from Kilmarnock FC said: "Kilmarnock Football Club were devastated to learn that dedicated supporter Gordon Stirling had tragically passed away last week at the young age of 23.

"Everyone at the club sends their deepest condolences to Gordon’s family and friends at this extremely difficult time.

"In memory of a loved member of the Killie family, both Kilmarnock FC and Motherwell FC are encouraging supporters to join a 60-second applause on the 23rd minute of this weekend’s match at Fir Park.

On Thursday, we told how a 42-year-old man was arrested in connection with Gordon's death[9].

He is still in hospital as cops continue to probe the fatal crash.

A Police Scotland[10] spokesperson said: "Extensive enquiries remain ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident and anyone with information is urged to contact police on 101, quoting incident number 3147 of 14 August, 2023."
