Heartbreaking tributes pour in for ‘lovely’ man, 56, killed in horrific motorway crash in Offaly

DEVASTATING tributes have poured in for a "lovely" man who was tragically killed in a motorway crash in Co Offaly yesterday.

Aidan Farrell was remembered as an “absolute gentleman” following the horrific incident on the M6 in Tullamore.

The 56-year-old Offaly[1]/Westmeath carpenter was hit by a truck on the road at around 4.45am on Saturday morning.

He was taken to the mortuary in Tullamore Hospital after he was fatally injured[2] in the collision.

The male driver of the truck, aged in his 40s, was uninjured.

Aidan’s family said that he will be “sadly missed and fondly remembered”.

Mourners flocked to the condolences section of an R.I.P.ie notice to express their sadness and sympathies at the news of his tragic death.

One said: “We met Aidan many times through family and friends and he was always so friendly and a mighty character.

"Such a talented carpenter he also did some work for us and was an absolute gentleman to deal with.

"Thinking of you all at this time. May Aidan rest in peace."

Another added: "Awful sorry to hear of your passing Aidan, you were a lovely man and loads of memory's throughout the years.

"You will be sadly missed by all especially your heartbroken family and partner, may you rest in peace my friend."

A third remembered Aidan as a "true gentleman" whilst a fourth friend said: "Deepest sympathy to the Farrell family on your huge sad loss.

"Absolutely shocked on hearing the tragic sad news. Only chatting Aidan on the May Bank Holiday and as usual the craic was always mighty in Aidans company.

'TAKEN WAY TOO SOON'

"Aidan was taken way too soon and he is going to be sorely missed in Ballinahown and further afield.

"Rest easy Aidan it was a pleasure knowing you. RIP."

Aidan is survived by his father Tony, brothers, Damian and Alan, sisters Fiona Gannon and Sandra Hamm and his loving partner Natasha. 

He is predeceased by his beloved mother Angela.

Funeral details have yet to be announced but will be confirmed at a later time.

Gardaí have urged any witnesses of the collision to come forward.

In a statement yesterday, a spokesperson said: "Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward and are also appealing for any road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, who were travelling in the area at the time of the collision to make this footage available to them.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Tullamore Garda Station on (057) 932 7600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."
