Live: M5 blocked near Bristol as bank holiday rush begins

There are long delays on the M5 and other major routes in the West Country as the Bank Holiday weekend begins. Traffic queues have been building around the region since this morning as people go on a getaway over the next few days.

The M5, especially the southbound carriageway between junctions 15 an 23, is often very busy at this time of year as holidaymakers descend to Somerset, Devon and Cornwall. As of 4.30pm, there are delays between junctions 21 (Weston-super-Mare) and 18 (M49 interchange) on the motorway.

The busiest travel time is often Friday afternoon, with holiday travellers mixing with commuters from across the region. Drivers should also be prepared for extra delays throughout the weekend.

Traffic camera images from the M5 show queues across various bits of the motorway. There is also congestion on roads including the M4 around the Almondsbury Interchange.
