M4 crash leaves car mangled as driver escapes serious injury
The horror crash occurred on the M4 eastbound, near junction 16 for Royal Wootton Bassett, at around 1.35am on Sunday, August 13, and involved just one vehicle.
A blue car, which police say was driven by 31-year-old Aaron Watkins, of Pellau Road in Port Talbot, left the carriageway and struck a tree before ending up overturned on the side of the road.
Pictures released by attending officers showed the significant damage caused to the mangled vehicle.
While Watkins managed to avoid any serious injuries in the collision, police allege he failed a roadside breathalyser test carried out by officers at the scene.
He has since been charged with drink driving and is due to appear at Swindon[1] Magistrates Court on August 30 after being bailed.
A spokesperson for the force said: “A near miss for this driver on the M4. Scene attended by Road Policing Units and Armed Response Vehicle.
“Miraculously the lone occupant wasn’t seriously injured, thankfully they hit a tree and not another vehicle.”
Police added they are cracking down on “fatal offences” and have urged anyone who suspects someone of drink driving to call 101, or 999 in an emergency, and provide as much information as possible.
