Man arrested as pedestrian dies after being hit by car in County Durham
A man has sadly died after a collision in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The pedestrian, who is in his late 30s, is believed to have been struck by a car at around 1am on the A689 New Road between Crook and Howden-le-Wear. Police say the collision happened just north of the cemetery at Howden-le-Wear and involved a red Mercedes A-Class.
Emergency services attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His family have been informed and officers have requested that people do not speculate on the circumstances on social media. A 24-year-old man was arrested at the scene and remains in police custody.
The road was closed for several hours while collision investigators worked at the scene, and it has since reopened. Officers would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or saw a red Mercedes in the area at the time.
They would also like to hear from anyone who may have any dashcam footage from the area at the time of the incident. Durham Constabulary have requested that potential witnesses call them on 101, quoting incident number 22 of August 12.
