Pedestrian dies in M1 crash involving HGV in Leicestershire

A person has died in a crash involving a lorry on the M1 in Leicestershire this morning. The motorway was closed in both directions[1] between Lutterworth and Leicester at around 8am after emergency services were called to the scene.

Leicestershire Police was called at 7.47am to reports of a crash involving a pedestrian and a heavy goods vehicle (HGV). The pedestrian, who has not yet been formally identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The lorry driver, a man believed to be in his 30s, was uninjured. Officers from the force’s serious collision unit[2] are now investigating the crash. The northbound carriageway at junction 20 remains closed.

A screen was placed around the area of the incident during the emergency response, and all traffic was held for around two hours. The southbound carriageway eventually re-opened at around 9.45am. Meanwhile, traffic caught within the northbound closure was released past the scene.

The incident led to long delays between Lutterworth[4] and Leicester throughout the morning. An earlier collision at the same location, which the police force was not asked to attend, also contributed to the level of congestion on the motorway.

Officers are now appealing to anyone who saw the fatal crash, or the circumstances leading up to it, to contact police. Anyone who might have dashcam footage relating to the incident is also asked to get in touch with the force.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting incident 134 of 23 August or online via the force’s website.
